Retreat & Pilgrimage

When I arrived to begin the Intercession for Priests Retreat at Hinsley Hall on Sunday, I must confess, I was a little half-hearted in my attitude! Returning Friday morning I feel very different - refreshed, affirmed, healed, redirected and strengthened anew in my relationship with Our Lord. The two retreat directors, Sister Briege McKenna OSC and Fr. Pablo Escriva de Romani, a priest of the Archdiocese of Madrid, also working as a missionary in the Diocese of Limon, Costa Rica were definitely chosen by God to help us all listen to the Word of God and actually listen to what He was saying to us as priests on retreat.

It was great to spend time with brother priests from different dioceses across England in prayer and adoration before the Blessed Sacrament as well as the fraternity outside of liturgies and talks. I feel very blessed. The first day was focused on Confession, recognising our need for God’s forgiveness, hence why Jesus instituted the Sacrament of Confession. It’s in those words of forgiveness that we are able to not only receive the Holy Eucharist with a pure heart and right disposition, but that we can grow further in our faith, in our relationship with Jesus. The second day was about healing and the importance of the Sacrament of the Sick. A gift from God that is often overlooked, taken for granted or not always fully believed to bring about healing. The third day we all renewed our priestly promises and spent time reflecting on the joy of priesthood and the fourth day was about praying for that joy to continue when we returned to our dioceses, parishes and communities.

Before the end of my month I hope to have completed my hat trick – Holiday in Rome, Retreat in Leeds and finally this week I end with a mini pilgrimage in Scotland and Northumbria. From Sunday afternoon to Thursday I’ll be following in the footsteps of Saints Oswald, Ninian, Cuthbert and Aidan. To all those who handed me petitions to pray for over my retreat, I did so faithfully, and will continue to do so on pilgrimage. Again this weekend there will be a box at the back of church (below the crucifix) for any parishioners who would like me to take some more prayers, petitions, intercessions with me on pilgrimage and pray for them. God Bless.

Our Lady of Oswaldtwistle

On the 8th September (which is the feast of Our Lady’s Birthday), in 1948 St. Mary’s was formally consecrated because the parish was finally debt free for the first time since 1897! By the side entrance to the church (Hawthorn Ave), there is a memorial stone to commemorate this event. This is our parish feast and so from Thursday 8th September – Sunday 11th September this year there will be different opportunities for both prayer, celebration and being together as a parish family. Please feel free to invite family, friends and neighbours along to the following events and let them know they’ll be warmly welcomed. It’s a great time to witness that St. Mary’s is very much an active Catholic community who are proud of our faith in Jesus Christ and want others to know about the blessings that Our Lady gives.

Ukraine Crisis

We are all shocked and appalled at the devastating scenes of the invasion of the Ukraine. Catholic agencies are at the centre of the response to the unfolding humanitarian crisis and supporting those whom have been displaced. We stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian people and all those against war. There are regular updates on the Caritas website on the various ways parishes and schools can support the aid effort. Help us on our journey to net zero

As part of its ongoing commitment to caring for our common home, the Diocese of Salford is working hard to reduce its carbon emissions. To do this, research is being undertaken to calculate our existing carbon footprint, and we are hoping to find out more about travel around the diocese as part of that. As such, we would be very grateful if parishioners could complete a short survey to help us understand a little more about their own journeys to and from church.

Please visit https://www.dioceseofsalford.org.uk/travel-survey/ to find out more and to complete the survey.

God Bless and keep praying.

Our Lady of Oswaldtwistle, pray for us.

Saint Joseph, pray for us.
