Dignity of Life: Note from Bishop John Sherrington

"From the end of February, it is likely that the Criminal Justice bill will return to parliament and that amendments will be tabled to decriminalise abortion up to the point of birth. As well as a direct attack on the dignity of the unborn, it is highly likely that these amendments, if passed, will have unforeseen consequences which could be very serious for both unborn babies and their mothers, especially given the increase in home abortions following the legalisation of the provision of abortion pills by post. It is possible that there will be other amendments more favourable to the rights of unborn babies. Work will be carried out by the secretariat, including the provision of a website tool to allow people to contact their Member of Parliament. You may wish to draw this to the attention of parishioners so that they can contact Members of Parliament as well as keeping our parliamentarians in their prayers at this time."

Take Action: What we can do here at St. Marys

Contact our MP – Sara Britcliffe (Hyndburn)

It is now very important that MPs are flooded with letters ahead of any vote at Report stage. Please contact our MP, asking her to oppose any attempt to decriminalise abortion. If you can, write a handwritten letter to her. Writing a personal, physical letter is one of the most effective ways to be a pro-life influence on her. Below is a template letter. It is very important that you edit this template to create a letter in your own words and make it personal. Add your own concerns, and any personal stories you might have.

Dear Sara,

I am writing to ask you to oppose and vote against any attempt to decriminalise abortion through amendments to the Criminal Justice Bill. NC1, by Dame Diana Johnson, and NC2, by Stella Creasy, both calling for the decriminalisation of abortion, were debated and withdrawn at the Committee Stage on 25th Jan.

However, Dame Diana has now tabled a very similar amendment at Report stage (also NC1).

This amendment says "For the purposes of sections 58 and 59 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861 and the Infant Life (Preservation) Act 1929, no offence is committed by a woman acting in relation to her own pregnancy." Removing these offences means a woman could induce her own abortion at any time, for any reason. This would include abortion up to birth and sex selective abortion.

This amendment is extreme, and dangerous to women. While the goal is supposedly to stop women being prosecuted for illegal abortion, the recent high profile cases of this have occurred because of the pills by post policy, which allows abortion providers to send abortion pills to women without an in-person consultation.

An example of this is Carla Foster, whose daughter Lily died at 32-34 weeks gestation, after she obtained abortion pills over the phone claiming that she was only seven weeks pregnant. It is this policy that needs to end to avoid such tragic cases in future. Removing any criminal sanction for abortion will only lead to more of these traumatic and dangerous late term abortions.

Please speak and vote against this amendment when it comes before Parliament.

Kind regards,

[Your Name]

To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve: to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. Turn then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus, O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! Amen.
