The lady of the manor of Walsingham, Richeldis de Faverches, was instructed by a vision of the Virgin Mary to build in her village a replica of the house of Nazareth in which the Annunciation had taken place. The vision occurred, according to tradition, in 1061A.D. The original house was destroyed at the Reformation, but during the 19th and early 20th centuries pilgrimage to Walsingham was revived.

6pm Mass, Saint Vincent De Paul, Priest (Memoria)

St. Vincent de Paul was born to a poor peasant family in the French village of Pouy on April 24, 1581. He was ordained in 1600. He spent his life preaching missions to and providing relief to the poor. He even established hospitals for them.  This was at a time when there were not many priests in France and what priests there were, were neither well-formed nor faithful to their way of life. Vincent helped reform the clergy and the manner in which they were instructed and prepared for the priesthood. He was eighty years old when he died in Paris on September 27, 1660.

Wednesday 28th September

10am Votive Mass of Saint Joseph

‘I don’t agree with the traditional picture of St. Joseph as an old man, even though it may have been prompted by a desire to emphasize the perpetual virginity of Mary. I see him as a strong, young man, perhaps a few years older than Our Lady, but in the prime of his life and work.’

- St. Josemaria Escriva

Thursday 29th September

10am Mass, Saints Michael, Gabriel & Raphael, Archangels (Feast)

Today celebrates God’s constant care for his people and intervention in their lives. The names of the angels reveal the aspect of God’s care: Michael means “Who is like God?”, Gabriel means “Strength of God” and Raphael “God has healed”.

Friday 30th September

5pm – 5:50pm Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

6pm Mass, Saint Jerome, Priest & Doctor of the Church (Memoria)

St. Jerome, born in Dalmatia in 340A.D, studied in Rome and was baptised; he became secretary to Pope Damasus I, and set about translating the Bible into Latin and promoting the monastic life. He settled in Bethlehem where he trained others in Scriptural studies and died in 420A.D.

Parish Walk:

A big thanks to Marie Leaver for facilitating our parish walk last Sunday along 8 miles of the Weavers Way. We had dramatic sky and clouds, fantastic panoramic views and a whole range of different terrain to walk through from woodlands and canal paths to hills and fields. Thanks to all the parishioners and friends of our parish who joined us for the walk and made it a memorable afternoon. Our next walk will be in the new year.

St. Oswald’s School

On Wednesday, the feast of St. Matthew, the pupils from key stage two joined us for our parish Mass. For many of the children it was their first time not only coming to a Mass but being inside church – their behavior was exemplary and they were a real credit to the school. I showed the children an image of the Caravaggio painting, ‘The Call of Matthew’, and told them that just like St. Matthew Jesus calls all of us to follow him. We all have a choice like St. Matthew did. We can stay in the shadows and hold on to our money and power and control or we can free ourselves and move into the light. The light that Jesus draws us to and experience things that money and power can’t buy – peace, mercy and the love of God for all time.

Bible Recommendation

When people ask me what Bible they should buy I always recommend the CTS Catholic Bible. I would like to add a further recommendation – The Word on Fire Bible, The Gospels. I’ve recently bought a copy and have found the notes and commentary in it really helpful to understanding the scriptures better. Though it’s only the four gospels and not all the books of the Bible I’ve found it a helpful tool to bring to Holy Hours and use for private prayer and personal reading. You can buy a copy at www.amazon.co.uk
