Our Lady of Oswaldtwistle Friday 9th – Sunday 11th September

One of the last big parish events before the Covid pandemic was the weekend feast for Our Lady of Oswaldtwistle in September 2019. There was a Friday evening Rosary Retreat; a Saturday evening torch light procession to the grotto; at the Sunday Mass the statue of Our Lady of Oswaldtwistle was solemnly carried through church; and finally there was a Parish BBQ on the Sunday afternoon. It would be wonderful to do this again, celebrating all those who have volunteered and supported our parish both in prayer and action throughout the year. Plus it's a wonderful opportunity to come together for something fun. We would hope to celebrate Our Lady and the anniversary of the church's consecration from Friday 9th – Sunday 11th September, the BBQ being on the Sunday. For such an event to take place it involves volunteers offering up their gifts and talents. If you can help from making brews, serving drinks, barbecuing burgers and sausages, washing up, finding gazebos and chairs, organising raffle tickets then you would be warmly welcomed and wanted. There will be a meeting this Wednesday (13th July) at 7:30pm at church for anybody who would be willing to volunteer their time and services.

Our Lady of Oswaldtwistle, pray for us.

Parish Finance Committee

The parish finance committee have very kindly taken time to help me compose a letter that sets out clearly the overall picture of St. Mary's finances. There is an overview how Covid has had an impact, our current financial situation and the different ways parishioners can still continue to help the parish financially. I would like to thank the committee for their time and support. The letter will be published for Masses next weekend 16th/17th July.

Coffee Morning

Thanks to Anthony Flanagan for bringing photos of the St. Mary's Operatic Society to the parish coffee morning. Our parish certainly has a rich and cultured history! The next parish coffee morning will be on Wednesday 10th August at 10:30am. It will be a special one to celebrate a very special birthday but shhhhhh - it's a secret, they don't know yet! More details to follow soon.

Sacred Heart School

The school had a fun and successful Summer Fair last Friday and have very generously donated £100 to the parish out of the monies they raised. A Thank You to Mrs Mashiter and the school community of Sacred Heart.

St. Mary's School

On Monday Mr Crompton organised a school retreat day based on God's love through His Son, Jesus. Every class was assigned different activities to make them think and reflect how Jesus' love is real, present and also a gift to be shared with those around us, both near and far. In the afternoon the whole school came to church to experience time before Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. There was a period of Adoration followed by Benediction. To have a church packed with young people in silent prayer before the Blessed Sacrament was truly inspiring! A parishioner remarked about the model behaviour the pupils demonstrated.

Universal Synod Responses

Our first word is a heartfelt 'Thank You' to all who engaged in the process of gathering diocesan responses to help Pope Francis and the Synod of Bishops in reflecting on the Church as Communion, Participation and Mission. Over 1500 individuals took part, and group submissions were received from families, organisations and parishes. Not all of these were Catholics who attend church regularly. The responses from our diocese will join those from the other dioceses in England and Wales, Europe, and the rest of the world. These will be discerned by the Synod of Bishops who will gather in Rome in 2023. At the back of church this weekend are leaflets, that have been sent through by the diocese, capturing the main points of feedback. Please feel free to take one or you can read the full response and a summary at www.dioceseofsalford.org.uk/faith/synod.

Ukraine Crisis

We are all shocked and appalled at the devastating scenes of the invasion of the Ukraine. Catholic agencies are at the centre of the response to the unfolding humanitarian crisis and supporting those whom have been displaced. We stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian people and all those against war. There are regular updates on the Caritas website on the various ways parishes and schools can support the aid effort.
