Masses & Liturgies for the Coming Week…

Tuesday 2nd November

11am All Souls Day Service

This liturgy will be led by the children of St. Mary’s School. All are warmly welcome to this time of refection when we pray for the repose of the souls of the faithful departed.

5pm - 5:50pm Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

6pm All Souls Mass

‘It is not Death that will come to fetch me, it is the good God. Death is no phantom, no horrible spectre, as presented in pictures. In the catechism it is stated that death is the separation of soul and body, that is all! Well, I am not afraid of a separation which will unite me to the good God forever.’ - St. Therese of Lisieux

Wednesday 3rd November

10am Mass, Saint Winifride, Virgin (Memoria)

Very is little is known for certain about her life except that she lived in the 6th or 7th century near Treffynon (Holywell) in Clwyd, North Wales. Devotion to her has been widespread since the middle ages. St Winifride is connected with Shrewsbury where her remains were enshrined in 1138 A.D, and her well at Holywell, which has remained a place of healing and pilgrimage through penal times to the present day.

Thursday 4th November

10am Mass, Saint Charles Borromeo, Bishop (Memoria)

St. Charles was born in 1538. After obtaining a doctorate in civil and canon law he was created a cardinal by his uncle, Pope Pius IV, and was chosen to be Bishop of Milan. He became a true shepherd of his flock, and frequently visited his diocese, called synods, made wise regulations for the good of souls, and worked for the good of Christian morality. He died in 1584.

Friday 5th November

5pm – 5:50pm Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

6pm Mass of the Sacred Heart (First Friday)

Our Lord wants us to know how deeply we are loved by Him especially through his Passion, Death and Resurrection. He chose St. Margaret Mary Alacoque to remind the world of His life giving love by asking her to promote devotion to His Sacred Heart.  Through this devotion, especially in the practice of going to Mass on the First Friday of the month, Our Lord made the following promises:

(1) I will give them all the graces necessary in their state of life.

(2) I will establish peace in their homes.

(3) I will comfort them in all their afflictions.

(4) I will be their secure refuge during life, and above all, in death.

(5) I will bestow abundant blessings upon all their undertakings.

(6) Sinners will find in my heart the source and infinite ocean of mercy.

(7) Lukewarm souls shall become fervent.

(8) Fervent souls shall quickly mount to high perfection.

(9) I will bless every place in which an image of my heart is exposed and honoured.

10) I will give to priests the gift of touching the most hardened hearts.

(11) Those who shall promote this devotion shall have their names written in my Heart.

(12) I promise you in the excessive mercy of my Heart that my all-powerful love will grant to all those who receive Holy Communion on the First Fridays in nine consecutive months the grace of final perseverance; they shall not die in my disgrace, nor without receiving their sacraments. My divine heart shall be their safe refuge in this last moment.

Saturday 6th November

9am – 9:50am Confessions & The Holy Rosary

‘Confession heals, confession justifies, confession grants pardon of sin, all hope consists in confession; in confession there is a chance for mercy.’ - St. Isidore of Seville

10am Votive Mass of Our Lady (celebrated in the Lady Chapel)

6:30pm Vigil Mass, Thirty Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Sunday 7th November

10am Mass, Thirty Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Following guidance from the diocese, we are still strongly encouraged to wear face masks in church  Thank you for continuing to make St. Mary’s a safe and prayerful place for the Glory of God.

The Sacrament of Confession & The Holy Rosary

On Saturday 6th November the Sacrament of Confession will be available from 9am – 9:45am. Those who haven’t taken the opportunity to come to Confession during the last year will testify to the safe and prayerful way in which it is celebrated.  The Rosary will be publicly prayed in church, by kind volunteers, during Confessions. The intention for each rosary will be that all faithful disciples of the Lord will return to Him in this most merciful Sacrament that He instituted. The invitation is there, the welcome is warm and His forgiveness is REAL! Will you come?

Welcome Back!

This weekend we welcome back Fr. Michael Doody who will be staying at St. Mary’s for a few days before returning back to teach at the Venerable English College in Rome. My cooking must be getting better as he keeps coming back!

All Souls Names

During the month of November we traditionally pray for all those who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith. On All Souls Day (Tues 2nd Nov) there will be the usual Holy Souls Box placed in front of the Altar. You are invited to write down the names of loved ones who have died on a piece of paper, and place them in the Holy Souls Box. For those parishioners who still feel unsafe about coming to Mass you are more than welcome to post names to me at the presbytery and I’ll pop them in the Holy Souls Box for you. I’ll be offering a Requiem Mass for all those names in the box during November at a date to be confirmed.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. And may the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Deanery Mass for the Dead

There will be the annual Requiem Mass for the deceased clergy and people of our deanery at Sacred Heart Church, Colne, 12 noon on Tuesday 9th November. All are welcome.

Congratulations!

Many people will have seen Adam Bamber, a parishioner, at Mass during the last week. Adam is a seminarian at Oscott College who is studying for the priesthood. He has now been formally accepted to be instituted with the ministry of Acolyte. This is one of the stages that any seminarian must receive from the Church as they continue towards the priesthood. I’ll be attending this Ministry Mass at Oscott to support Adam on Tuesday 9th November and I’m sure we’ll all continue to keep him in our prayers as he continues with his studies.

NIGHT FEVER!

Night Fever is the title given to a certain type of church event that has become quite popular in recent years. The title is a little obscure, apart from the fact that this activity usually takes place in the early evening, or at least after night fall. The Night Fever event is designed to be an evangelistic exercise, in that it includes inviting people to come into church from the street, to light a candle, to say a prayer, or just to sit down for a few moments—or for however long they might wish to stay. In the dimly lit church, there is exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, arrays of candles, and prayerful music being played. This spiritual setting and atmosphere is something that we, as Catholics, might take for granted, but for those who have rarely, or even never, entered a church, this experience can be very moving for them. As part of the Hope in the Future programme which is ongoing in the Diocese, the Deanery will host a:

Night Fever evening at Christ Church on Friday 3rd December from 6.00pm—8.00pm.

November Mass for the Pandemic at Salford Cathedral Sunday 7th November 2021, 11am

Salford Cathedral (The mass will also be livestreamed on churchservices.tv)

Throughout November Catholic Dioceses across the UK will commemorate and celebrate all those affected by the pandemic. This will take the form of Masses for the Pandemic in Catholic cathedrals around the country. On Sunday 7th November, the Diocese of Salford will remember the dead and draw attention to the Christian attitude towards care, exemplified by the compassion and commitment of our healthcare workers during this unprecedented time. Everyone is welcome to attend this Holy Mass, but we’d like to ask you to extend a special invitation to healthcare professionals, those working in care homes and hospices in your parish to join us as we give thanks for their service.

Discovering Plainchant - A Workshop for Singers

Saturday 20th November 2021, 10.30am - 4pm

St Augustine's Catholic Church, Grosvenor Square, Manchester, M15 6BW

A fascinating workshop exploring the world of plainchant is being held at St Augustine's Catholic Church in Manchester next month.  This is the first of several workshops devoted to the repertoire of Catholic liturgical music organised by the St Philip Neri Singers. In this introduction, you will be given an introduction to chant repertoire, taught how to read chant notation, and learn to sing pieces, concentrating on music for Eucharistic Adoration and for Our Lady. For more information, please contact the choir director Dr Rosemarie Darby on stphilipnerisingers@yahoo.co.uk or by calling 07798858900.

A Light in this World

November is the month of the dead when we celebrate the lives of the faithful departed. More than ever, we may find ourselves thinking about a loved one. We then see Advent dawning, when we prepare for the Lord's coming in glory. This year, why not make a dedication to someone you love, someone you miss or someone who has no-one else to pray for them. Together, we can keep their light shining, whilst making a difference to the lives of those who need it most. Please visit https://caritassalford.dedicationpage.org/ Please note that all dedications made by Monday 22nd November will then be remembered by name during the Caritas Mass of Remembrance on Friday 26th November at 7.00 pm celebrated by Fr Ged Murphy, Episcopal Vicar for Caritas, at St Anne’s RC Church, Stretford.

Good News: The Friendship Club

The Friendship Club is able to start again. The first meeting will be at 2pm on Wednesday 3rd November at the Adelaide Suite. At the meeting people can sign up for the Christmas Lunch. It will be so good to see everyone again.

Volunteer Gardeners

Autumn is definitely here with the nights drawing in, temperatures getting cooler and leaves on the trees dropping. As always if there are any kind volunteers who would be prepared to help clear the church paths and grounds of leaves then please do get in contact with Navada at keenannavada@gmail.com

The Covid Vaccine

“Bishop John is urging all adults, who are able to do so, to be vaccinated. Pope Francis has reminded people of the duty to be vaccinated if they are able. The Church is clear that all Catholics can take any of the vaccines on offer with a clear conscience. Even if you are at a low risk of becoming seriously ill, being vaccinated will lower the risk of transmitting the virus to somebody else who might then have a severe reaction or even die. It is particularly important that those in our parishes, clergy and lay-people who visit those who are housebound or otherwise vulnerable are vaccinated.”

Leo Parker RIP

The daughter of the late Leo Parker contacted the parish office this week to pass on the news of his death. Leo was a parishioner of St. Mary’s from 1976 – 2002. His daughter would like it known that anybody who knew her dad would be most welcome to come to his funeral at English Martyrs Church, Whalley, on Friday 5th November at 1pm.

God Bless and keep praying.

Our Lady of Oswaldtwistle, pray for us.

Saint Joseph, pray for us.
