Parish Visit from the Bishop

On Wednesday (22nd November) the Bishop will be visiting our parish school, St. Oswald's on Hartley Avenue (BB5 0NN), to plant a number of trees as part of the Forest Schools Initiative. Following the Holy Father's call for all to engage with the responsibility of stewardship over creation, the Bishop will be encouraging the school community in their positive response towards care for the environment. The Bishop's Blessing will hopefully begin at 10am and the school have invited all parishioners to come and take part in this prayer with refreshments available afterwards.

Thank You!

This week the parish received a donation of £2000 from a local company, The Accrington Celesti Heritage Shop Ltd. On behalf of the parish I would like to say thank you to the Heritage Shop Ltd for their very generous donation towards St. Mary's. It is very much appreciated, especially at this time of year with rising fuel costs.

Diocesan Synod: The Parish "Big Listen"

We had the first of our Synod events last Sunday, and it was wonderful to hear the thoughts of those attending around the 4 key questions we are asking on behalf of Bishop Arnold and the Diocese of Salford. Our next event will be after the 10.00 am mass on Sunday 19 November, and it would be great to hear from you, as your opinion really matters. So, if you can spare some time it would be wonderful to see you.

Mass for Vocations to the Priesthood

St Bernadette's, Bury New Road, Whitefield, Manchester, M45 7SX,

Each month, our diocesan vocations team travels to a different deanery to hold a special Mass to pray for the future of the priesthood in our diocese. The next Mass for Vocations to the Priesthood is set to take place at 7.30pm on Tuesday 21st November at St Bernadette's in Whitefield. All are welcome to attend.

November: Month of the Holy Souls

The month of November, for us as Roman Catholics, is traditionally a time dedicated to praying for the dead and all the Holy Souls in purgatory who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith. Throughout November we will have our usual box containing the names of those who have died placed in front of the Altar and each Mass they will be prayed for. If you would like to have the names of people you have known who have died then please feel free to write their names down on a piece of paper and place them in the Holy Souls Box.

Blessing Graves

The last few years our parish has joined St. Anne & St. Joseph's for the blessing of graves at Accrington cemetery and Dill Hall Cemetery. Fr. Wadsworth, the parish priest at St. Anne's, has organised the following dates for this years blessing of graves:

Dill Hall Cemetery - Sunday, 19th November at 2:00pm

The date for Dill Hall is also the same day as our parish social at Franco's therefore on Saturday 18th November at 1pm I'll be at Dill Hall to bless the graves of those who won't be able to make the Sunday afternoon.

St. Oswald's School

On Wednesday morning the school joined us for the 10am parish Mass. Being the month of November it was a good opportunity to remind the pupils of the importance of praying for all those who have died. We lit the Paschal candle to help us understand that though death is a sad time, we have hope as believers in the Risen Jesus. The flame of the Paschal Candle represents the light of Life Himself dispelling the darkness of the tomb.

In the afternoon I was invited by Miss Collinge to talk to her class about the vocation of the priesthood and religious life. It's always a wonderful opportunity to share faith with our younger people.

St. Mary's School

Mrs Duckworth's Class, The Dolphins, joined us for the 10am parish Mass on Thursday when we celebrated the Memoria of St. Margaret of Scotland. I showed the children the stained glass window in our church dedicated to this saintly wife and mother, known for her works of mercy. I then told the pupils about her story from being a refugee to becoming a queen. Why do we have a window to St. Margaret of Scotland in our church? Because the first parish priest of St. Mary's, Fr. Brereton, was Scottish and his mum was called Margaret!
