Lenten Retreat. Lent (begins next month) is always that wonderful time when we can reconnect and renew
our relationship with the Lord.
I have been lucky enough to secure Barbara Reed-Mason, a well-known
international retreat coordinator, to give us a week's retreat here at St Mary's. It will be an opportunity for
prayer and coming closer to the Lord. The retreat is known as the Kerygma Bible Course and will be over
one week from Monday 11th
March - Friday 15th March starting at 7pm-9pm each night. Everyone is
welcome, so do come and bring friends and family.

Safeguarding. Thank you to all those who came to the safeguarding evening last Wednesday. Over 30
people came to update and complete DBS checks. The diocesan safeguarding team commented it was the
best parish response they had seen for a long time. For any queries about safeguarding please speak to our

Diocesan Mass For Our Young People: "Be Who God Created You To Be" Tuesday 26th February, 2019,
7.00 p
.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Rochdale All are welcome at this Mass for Youth, especially the young
but also all others who wish to encourage and pray for our young people. It should be a great celebration and

Future Parish Events. We are blessed to have a group in the parish who are working hard to put on events
that are continuing to nurture the social aspect of our parish family here at St
. Mary's, with the bonus of
helping raise money for our church. Some of the events planned for the future are:

March -An evening at Franco's, £15 per head for a two-course meal plus Coffee & Cake. Date to be
confirmed, but add your name to the list which will be placed at the back of Church.
April - Easter Egg
Raffle,
plus an Easter Bonnet Competition. May - To celebrate the 125th Anniversary of Fr. Brereton's
arrival to St. Mary's
, there will be Afternoon Tea, served in the Parish Centre, details to follow. A quiz will
be held in the Parish Centre, Team of 4 at £ 10 per team. We would welcome any parishioners interested in
helping, to make themselves known, to any of the following: - David Joyce, Pam Kornecki, Navada Keenan,
Collette Westwell, S
ian Owen, Tony Alveston.

ABC Course. The next meeting is at 7pm on Thursday 21st February.

St. Man's Community Project. The next meeting in on Wednesday 20th February at 7pm.

St. Patrick Missionary Society. Fr. Joseph Archibong who came two weeks ago to give a mission appeal
wrote this week to say "Thank You" for the warm welcome he received and for all donations which came to
the generous total of £251.51.

Safeguarding. This Wednesday, 13th February, from 5pm -7:30pm the diocesan safeguarding team will be
here at church to update people's DBS checks, for those who volunteer and undertake certain activities in
the parish. If you have not had your DBS updated in the last three years, or you are involved in a new
role/group/task in the parish then do come. To help speed the process up bring, if you can, your passport,
driving licence, birth certificate, national insurance number and a letter from the bank/doctor or a utility bill

Our Lady of Oswaldtwistle. Lewis & Lewis have removed the fire damaged reredos from the altar of Our
Lady of Oswaldtwistle and have taken it back to their workshop in Liverpool
. They are initially hoping to
have it restored by May. Let us continue to ask Our Lady to pray for our parish family.

Gift Aid. Many people have been asking about the Gift Aid Scheme and how it benefits the parish. We are
very lucky to have Sean Mullen who co-ordinates this for us and he will be available after both Masses this
weekend. If you are a tax payer, the Diocese can reclaim tax for our parish on your donations/weekly
collections. For every £1 you put in the collection (in a Gift Aid envelope) St Mary's will receive an

Caritas. The retiring collection this week is for Caritas. Caritas is asking all parishioners this year to use
their gifts and talents to #BeTheChange and to help House the Homeless; Build Stronger Families and
Communities
; and Welcome Refugees. The Caritas representative for St
. Mary's is Claire Munroe.

St. Mary's Male Voice Choir. On Sunday 10th February after the l0am Mass the choir will have their
AGM at the back of church. There is a warm invitation to any gentlemen who would like to join the choir.
It's an opportunity to meet new people, be part of a long standing and living musical tradition at St. Mary's
but most importantly to give praise to God. As St
. Augustine wrote, 'He who sings prays twice over!'

Parish Celebration. This year will mark 125 years since the first parish priest, Fr. J. Brereton, arrived in
Oswaldtwistle. To mark this occasion, we are hoping to have an exhibition at the back of church in May.
This exhibition will be comprised of photos and other archive material about the life of St
. Mary's over the
last century or so. If you have any photos or other material relating to the life of the parish that we could
have or copy then please let John Hughes know.

Baptism Course. The Baptism Course will begin today after the l0am Sunday Mass (3fd Feb).

The Royal British Lemon. Danny Cassidy is helping to resurrect the local branch of the British Legion.
The next two meetings are 1pm Sun l0th February at New Lane Baptist Church, New Lane, Oswaldtwistle
and 1 pm Sunday IO" March at Holy Trinity Church, New Lane, Oswaldtwistle. For more information

Sacramental Programme. On Wednesday 6th February there will be a meeting at 6:30pm for those parents
and children who are already enrolled on the current programme.
