Next Weekend is a day of prayer for "Life" and there will be a second collection to support the Church's work in this area.
Last weekend I attended the Proclaim'15 Conference in Birmingham along with 34 other delegates from Salford Diocese. The National Conference with 850 delegates, of which were 20 Bishops and 77 priests, from all over the country of gathered to hear a way forward to proclaim a "New Evangelisation" within the Church. This movement is a result of the "Year of Faith" and a call by Pope Francis for us to become a "Missionary Church" with "Missionary Parishes" made up of people who are "Missionary Disciples."
I further attended the first of legacy meetings to discuss how we move forward in the diocese. Here in St Mary's I will be setting up a Parish Evangelisation Team (PET) to look at how we are to enable this parish to be missionary. This will not be a working group. It will be a group that will form the conscience of the parish. This group will undergo a process of six months of formation before identifying new ways for us to become "Missionary". During this time of formation the PET will be invited to become familiar with some of the basic church texts related to evangelisation and especially in the context of the parish. Over a series of meetings they will have the opportunity to look at the Gospel mandate for mission and its implications, and then to move forward as some of the key ideas from Vatican II, Paul VI's encyclical "Evangelii Nuntiandi" leading to Pope Francis' "Evangelii Guadium".
After this the group will explore a simple review of the parish as it is now in terms of evangelisation, looking at where the parish is now, what needs to change, what can be improved, what are the parish's strengths and weaknesses, and evaluating how evangelisation is seen in the parish, and who or which groups are actively and consciously involved in evangelisation at the moment.
"For the Church, evangelising means bringing the Good News to all the strata of humanity, and through its influence transforming humanity from within and making it new…." (Pope Paul VI Evangelii Nuntiandi, 1975)
